Where are the very foggy and windy areas of S.F.? (Oakland: rental, home)

What areas are foggy? Windy?

Anything on the west coast of the city or up on the hills in such districts like North Beach, Marina, Richmond and Sunset. But as far as wind goes, generally it will be everywhere, it's a fact of life in SF!

Generally speaking, the closer to the beach (meaning the beaches along the open Pacific) the foggier and windier. As noted some ridges are that way as well. Also, anything downwind from a fog gap (e.g. low spot in the hills) - i.e. near the Golden Gate, far SE part of the City, etc.

Flip side - Potrero Hill, South Beach, The Mission, and Noe Valley, tend to have more of a typical bayside climate similar to the Peninsula, Southern Marin and the inner East Bay.

During the summer, foggy and windy can be anywhere. Oakland is not that far away but it is much calmer weather-wise.

My mom always said the Richmond had the dreariest weather. It was also damp where she lived when she lived in the lower Haight.

Conversely, her apts in Russian Hill and Pacific Hts were brighter and seemed to have better weather.

Thank you, all! I think we are going to end up on the Peninsula due to work in Foster City. I read some that Foster City is built on landfill. I'll have to read up on earthquakes! We are hoping to find a rental home on the bay. I know, it will cost us an arm and a leg, but we want to rent for a while until we can get a handle on the area...seems like there are a lot of different climates, not to mention each area seems to have a different vibe.

Foster City's landfill is good against earthquakes, it's not like the Marina's which results in widespread damage when you get a shaker. They did it right. Same with Redwood Shores which is cut from the same cloth.
