Hi,
I recently saw an opening in Oakland, at this location:
1106 Madison StOakland, CA 94607
It fits pretty well for what I do and I thought about applying, but i've never been to oakland. i've been to san fran and ceritos before in CA, but never oakland. Is there area safe to work in, i'm guessing I could live in sf and commute to oakland. and any ideas what a good salary would be to live in sf? i'm from the east coast, looking for a warmer place to live

Oakland is a big city, and San Francisco is no escape from Crime, people get murdered in SF like all big cities. Don't think you'll be any safer living or working in SF than in Oakland. Madison St. Is near Downtown. You'll be fine. To live in SF you'll need to make at least 50K to be comfortable.

You should be safe there. Downtown Oakland is pretty safe. If you're looking for warmer weather and planning to work in Oakland, it would make more sense to live in Oakland or elsewhere in the East Bay. The weather is nicer in Oakland, and rents tend to be cheaper. But if safety is your main concern you should look in places other than East or West Oakland (though there are plenty of parts of these areas that are just fine). You might want to look in San Leandro, Berkeley or Albany for convenience/warm weather/safety, though SF would be much more interesting for you to live in if you can afford it.

I really feel that if you have to ask the question, please work some place else. I am so tired of county workers willing to work in Oakland, take the high salaries and great benefits and then talk about how they wouldn't live in Oakland for anything. If you want to live in SF why not try to get a job in SF county?

Five blocks from where I work. Perfectly safe. And I live in Oakland too. Plenty of places that are perfectly safe, in fact downright nice. Tons of nice places to live around Lake Merritt, which is a block away from your job. You could easily live car-free (or at least car-light).

Geez not another one of these threads.

No Oakland is not safe to live or work in. If you even step inside the city limits of Oakland you'll be murdered. I was murdered 4 times last week. My cars, bikes, motorcycle, and boats were stolen. My dog was mugged and raped at gunpoint. The horrors never end.

So that's why you moved to Piedmont!

LOL. Tis true.

To the OP: Yes, Oakland is safe for working, but if you're looking in the corners for shadows, you'll eventually find one.
