you need to be discussing this with people who really know and not us, with our ideas. From what I know, anything in the bay area that would fall under section 8 may not be in an area I would want to live. You are coming from Iowa City, SFO is a whole new world.

Yes... I've done it for 2 of my elderly tenants...

All you need to do is schedule a move-in inspection once you have your Voucher in hand.

The unit will be inspected to insure it meets minimum HQS and if it does and the rent requested is approved... you are good to go...

I think there is a fairly robust selection of Section 8 housing in San Jose. They're often apartments without air conditioning in a town that frequently hits 100 degrees, though.
Frequently? I wouldn't say frequently. It goes above 90 maybe 20 or 25 days a year, over 100 probably less than 10.

I live in downtown SJ in a 2nd floor non-air conditioned apartment and I don't think I'm uncomfortable more than 10 days a year, if that. I realize downtown is cooler than South SJ, but even so, it's not that bad. Californians are soooo spoiled.

I live in a non air conditioned standalone house and I'm uncomfortable for weeks on end. I can tolerate it, but I liked living near the coast a lot better.

Just for the record -- I believe any property owner can request their unit of housing become section 8 anywhere. And so there are section 8 renters everywhere. Even in the Good Neighborhoods.

That's sort of the idea of section 8.

Be ready to move into a small place since local rent is high.
