Hi,

I'll be attending graduate school at UCB and I was wondering what areas are good areas for graduate students? I'm single with no kids and prefer to live where it's quiet, but something that is in walking/biking distance to the hip/trendy areas.

Speaking of trendy, where/what are the trendy areas?

Thanks.

Ok...so what are the "cool" areas of Berkeley? I'm assuming Berkeley has cool areas, right?

In response to Joe_Ryder's post: Doesn't Berkeley have different neighborhoods within it? I'm from San Diego and it's full of "mini neighborhoods", so-to-speak, so I was wondering if Berkeley was similar? I'll be making my way to Berkeley, soon, to look around but I just wanted to get some information first.

You will love College Avenue. Trendy shops, coffee houses, shopping, excellent eateries, fruit markets. etc.
The avenue is lined with big, old trees which gives it a New England look.
College Avenue also extends into the Rockridge area of Oakland which is kind of pricey but the atmosphere is awesome!

Berkeley does indeed have many different neighborhoods. Berkeley isn't exactly large so everything is fairly close to everything. Our cities are a bit more compact than what you're used to in SoCal. We don't need to hop on an airplane to get to the local grocer. Berkeley is a fairly walkable city so you're never far from where you need to be.
