I was just wondering how expensive san francisco is compared to the other major cities like boston, LA, seattle, NYC, chicago. How expensive is it to live there?

As far as housing costs, go, New York City is #1, San Francisco is #2, and L.A. is #3. You'd probably have lower utility costs in California than in New York; no frigid winters here unless you're in the mountains!

NYC is the most expensive (very high property taxes, high utilities, more expensive food, higher rent...everything there seems to be more expensive) but SF is right behind it when it comes to costs.

Don't come here expecting for it to be cheap! Seattle and Chicago are the cheapest of your options.

Only NYC is more expensive, for living in the city proper.

If one averages costs across the entire conurbation, it's actually more expensive here than NYC/NE NJ/LI/W CT. We could sell our house here and get a bigger place with more land in a comparable NYC burb. Heck, we could even get a better place in the not too gritty (but not best) part of Brooklyn for the same money!
