Don't move to Ashby... I lived there when I was 6-11 years old. (it was the mid-late 90s.) Wrong side of Martin Luther King means everything. Areas near Telegraph seemed better.

I don't have any positive memories of it. My mom got attacked by a drug dealer who lived down the street, loud neighbors who would fight publicly and often, home-grown "guard dogs" in the next yard over meant if you lost a frisbee it was GONE, and strict restrictions on what flowers were "approved" to be grown in the back/side yard (aka, no wildflowers, vegetables, roses, snapdragons)-- but the Thai temple actually owned our property, so that may have been why...

Meh. I'm just bitter; who does love their childhood? Maybe its changed since '97.

wow. Ok. Everyone who posted that S. Berkeley is ok must just drive through it. And those who lived in it must've lived nearby Elmwood or College ave or something. Not for nothing, but I lived in the part where just 2 blocks over it is West Oakland. Yes, W. Oakland. Go to Oakland.crimespotting.org. West and East oakland are terrible. Anyways, crime that happened particularly to me. Car was stolen out the driveway. Bike and e.scooter was stolen from outside of your fenced yard area thing. Trashcans (behind fence) are dived into weekly. Gunshots at the corner of Julia + Sacremento twice. Next door neighbor dealt drugs in his yard and threw cans over our fence. People are all section 8 and sit out on the porch smoking weed all day instead of working. Neighbor beat his dog with a metal pipe, police then had to question me for 1 hour about it then animal control questioned me about it. Forget about taking public transportation. Weed smokers hang around bus stops to harass you. CHECK LIQUOR STORE TO GROCERY STORE RATIO. Liquor store on Sacremento and Ashby gets robbed by teens, clerk keeps shotgun visible. Just say no. We were suckered into it because we didn't know about the area. That mistake, we are out of a car, bike, e.scooter and a big as fine for breaking our lease.

Sounds like you had one hell of a journey. Were you really "suckered" into this, or just did not know what you were getting into?

Seriously, I always felt it was painfully obvious that much of South Berkeley was pretty sketchy. Especially by Ashby BART. You can look at the sidewalk to street light ratio and figure out it probably isn't a great place to be after dark. My 2 cents.

Have you been to south Berkeley? I suggest you spend some time visiting the area before you commit to buying a house there, or anywhere. Make sure you check out the area during the day and night, talk to neighbors and walk around to see how you feel about it. Different people have different tolerance levels but what has been said so far here is pretty accurate.
