Out of the regions that you list, it's most closely associated with the Peninsula and the South Bay. Roughly speaking, Silicon Valley is the area running from Menlo Park down to San Jose, though some people go as far north as Redwood City.

Silicon Valley originally referred to the high-tech region in San Jose and in Santa Clara county in general. With time though, more high-tech companies have scattered throughout other parts of the Bay Area and the "Silicon Valley spirit" has spread outward. Some people do consider some parts of the peninsula (such as Redwood City as the previous poster said) to be part of Silicon Valley. Fremont in the East Bay often times is also considered to be as well. So, to answer your question, San Jose/Santa Clara Valley are the original Silicon Valley.

San Jose is South Bay. Peninsula is basically San Mateo County + a couple towns in northern Santa Clara County.

SV is suburban sprawl that encompasses the various suburbs that are home to most of world's most valuable tech cos.

SV is prob best defined by locations of HQs of the $100+Bn (mkt value) tech giants and the major venture capitalists that finance the start-ups, some of which become future giants

By that definition, SV stretches from RedwoodShores (Oracle) through PaloAlto (HP), MtnView (Google), Cupertino (Apple), SantaClara (Intel) and SanJose (Cisco)

The major VCs are almost all in MenloPark on Sand Hill Rd

Very little of consequence is in EastBay except Chevron HQ

SV defines an economy more than a specific town or place, much like "WallStreet"....aside from Goldman, nearly all of world's leading investment banks, hedge funds and private equity shops are nowhere near Wall Street, rather their offices are in Midtown Manhattan or suburban Greenwich CT

Did the OP ask about VC's and their comparisons to "Wall Street" etc???

Why dear gods, why, do you keep cutting and pasting the same response to everything?????

Actually, back when there were orchards and stock yards in Santa Clara and San Jose, Silicon Valley referred to the concentration of up and coming tech firms roughly located between Harbor Blvd on the Belmont - San Carlos border, and, at the extreme SE end, National Semi near the Sunnyvale - Santa Clara border. Ground zero was roughly the Palo Alto - Mt. View border. With success came growth and with growth the need for more space and newer facilities. Only then (1970s) did the growth head south and east into the Sunnyvale, South San Jose, Union City "triangle" roughly centered on the "Golden Triangle" of 237-880-101.

Now, tech firms range from San Mateo to Gilroy and on up to Oakland, with an additional major locus of Web 2.0 places in the South of Market area of The City and others scattered in various places in the general Bay Area burbs. Seemingly, more mature firms are in the Eastern portions, due to cost whereas the Peninsula and the City are more geared toward start ups.
