The tax rate in California is a progressive rate. He won't pay 9.55 on the whole amount.

We earn over 100k and our "real" rate of taxation is less than 3%.

but in Mt View in 25 miles or less you can drive to San Francisco or San Jose. Drive an hour or so and be in Monterey, Napa, the ocean etc. In Vegas you have that city and nothing else. If you live in Vegas it still might take you the same driving time to get to the nightlife even if you live in city limits.

I'm a South Bay transplant to Las Vegas and I can tell everyone here that it was the best move for me financially. I know all the stereo types of Las Vegas is basically programed in peoples heads, but most of them are not really true. There is a large city outside the strip and most locals do no even venture to the strip unless they have friends or family coming to visit them from out of town. I own a nice home here and I live a very comfortable life (something I would never afford in the Bay Area). If I wanted to go to the Bay Area its only a 1 hour plane ride, and with all the money i've actually saved I can afford to go on more vacations and trips. I know Las Vegas is not for everyone, but i'm just posting this opinion from someone who has lived in both places.

I hope your job offer is solid. Both California and Nevada have about 12% unemployment.
You've got to be joking..There's alot of different things to do in Las Vegas besides casinos and clubs....My best friend lives their making 60k and his money goes very far..I would do Vegas in a heartbeat,..You'll be able to save, and be way ahead on your money..Thats what matters in this economy.

Your drive times for the bay area are overly optimistic to say the least. 25 miles during morning or evening rush hour can and will take hours

If you mean culture as far as different races..Both citites have it..SF has always been a melting pot of cultures..But last time I was in Las Vegas I was suprised on the diversity of people who actually live there..Plus their's tons of bars and restaurants outside of the strip, that are fun.. Trust me, there's plenty to do there..

For goodness sake...in virtually any dimension the peninsula looks like Vegas and Vegas looks like the peninsula...in fact Vegas tracts are roomier.

And going to SF from the peninsula is less common than going to the strip for LV residents. And LV residents never go to the strip...

The OP didn't seem to care about money issues, rather, they were looking at the quality of life. The Bay Area wins hands down.

Tax revenues in Nevada have fallen dramatically the last year. If tourism and gambling don't increase soon they may have to make some changes in their tax structure to increase state tax revenues.

If the only thing that matters to you is the size of the house you can afford, by all means choose Las Vegas. When I'm picking a place to live, I take many things into consideration other than how many bedrooms, baths, and acres I can afford. Las Vegas is great if you want to to live in a big house in a quiet suburb and drive your car to everything. If you want to be within a reasonable distance of everything a big city has to offer, be able to visit neighborhoods where there are places to walk around other than shopping malls, it's the Bay Area.
