The shorter milage will let you walk around Napa, St Helena, calistoga. Maybe go to a few wineries, grab lunch would make a nice day. I tend to drive a lot and not stop much so I could do the whole route with Mendocino.
One of my favorite side routes is to stop in Occidental and eat at one of the Italian eateries there. MMMMMM.

Why go so far? And why cross a bridge?

Simply take 280 south, pop over to Half Moon Bay on 92. Then take 1 south to Pescadero Road or perhaps take a slight side trip down to the Pigeon Pt lighthouse then resume by returning to Pescadero. Wind up Pescadero Road then peel off on La Honda Road. Along the way, stop and take in an uncrowded redwood grove. Take Portola up to Skyline. Take Skyline North, stop at Alice's Restaurant for lunch. Drive a bit further and stop at Skeggs Point for the view. Continue on to 92. You then have a choice. You can turn right, go back to 280, or, turn left and retrace your steps back to HMB. But this time, turn right and head north up Hwy 1 back to SF. The beauty of this route is that you will encounter very few tourists and will be living like a local.

Sounds better?
I would cut off a lot of miles and avoid 101...

From San Francisco drive to Stinson Beach and on the way back stop at Muir Woods or Mt. Tamalpais. You could do this in one day and the scenery is 100x nicer than anything you will see on HWY 101. Use mapquest to find directions to Stinson Beach, beautiful!

The other place that is a really nice area to drive is directly over the Golden Gate Bridge, go there at night, it's romantic and beautiful. Everytime I see wild deers and hear seals honking. Directions: Take the first exit North after you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, check out the view and get back on HWY 101 North and take the very next exit. Make a left to get back on HWY 101 South towards San Francisco and right before you get on the HWY, you will be able to make a right up the side of the mountain. Take that road all the way to the top and it will turn into a narrow one way street going down the side of the mountain...amazing!

I think your route will be good. I only use 101 to get to other places more quickly but since you minimized 101 you should be good. Make sure you post pictures of your trip!

That's the road!

You can drive a loop, take it all the way until it comes to a T, make a left, continue until the next T, make a left, continue straight until you come to an outlook (turns into gravel), that's where you will hear wild seals etc. Most likely you will be the only car there if you go at night.
