Hallo,

My husband, my son and I are travelling to San Francisco over Christmas. We are from Vienna, Austria, Europe and I was just wondering if anyone could help me with the following.

What is worth sightseeing?
Good Restaurants
Places to go and see with a three year old son
Nice Places to go shopping;- normal and discount shops
Which public parks can you go to with children?
Recommendable toy stores, also with lots of thomas and friends stuff or just trains
Where to find a good African American Hairdresser that is not too expensive?
(I am half South African and Austrian) in Vienna we do NOT have any good Hairdressers for my kind of hair (Only cheap hairdressers with people who are not qualified for my kind of hair), so you might understand how hard it is to get any product, let alone get your hair done nicely.

I have lived in the U.S for a year in Atlanta Georgia and also have been to N.Y quite a few times, so I am a little acquainted with products and shops, but always prefer insider recommendations than to visit all the “Typical” tourist sites.

I would really appreciate your help.

Kind Regards
Pam

I suggest you visit the Cable Car Museum (which is near Chinatown), Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf (including the sea lions nearby) and ride the cable car.

Christmas in SF might be colder than you expect...

I had visitors from Austria last January and they packed clothes for warm California weather and almost nothing for the 52 degree weather they experienced.

I like to take my kids on the Duck Tours, cable car, Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Academy of Sciences, Exploratorium and there is a new Disney museum in the Presidio that looks good too.

Dear All,

Thank you so much for you quick responses!

I did not think that it would rain so much??

I am a bit confused about the weather; my husband says it will be about 10-15degrees which is about 52 Fahrenheit??

I guess it’s colder than that isn’t it?

I am just looking into your suggestions, and Fisherman’s Wharf reminds me so much of Cape Cape with the Sea Lions in South Africa.

We will defiantly do the Alcatraz and duck tours, and yes my son will love the cable cars and Disney museum.

Once again thank you!

Pam

The low to mid 50's in December is correct, it may feel cooler some days though.

1. Alcatraz, Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Marina District, North Beach District, Coit Tower, Lombard Street, ride the cable cars, Fisherman's Wharf, Pacific Heights (the house on Mrs. Doubtfire), Ghirardelli Square, Chinatown are some areas and things I recommend.

2. Depends on what cuisine you like. Some of my favorites...Osha Thai (Thai), R&G Lounge (authentic Chinese), Burma Star (Burmese), The Stinking Rose (Garlic), Lahore Karahi (Indian), Koi Palace (Dim Sum), Schnitzel House (German)...my favorite is R&G Lounge.

3. Cable Car, Exploratorium, Lombard Street, G. Square, Fisherman's Wharf

4. Union Square, Chesnut Street (Marina District), Haight Street...I like the atmosphere of Chesnut Street in the Marina District.

5. Crissy Field, Golden Gate Park

For hair salons, search on www.yelp.com - many residents in the Bay Area use it, I used it all the time.
