We are relocating rather soon to the SFB area, we have 2 kids 10 and 8 , we would like to live in a family friendly neighborhood with excellent public schools and have our commute under 40 min. It is also important to us to live close to a synagogue (reform). My wife will be working in SF and myself (do not yet but I am not concerned much about my commute time)

Any suggestion where this place could be?

How about Burlingame? Excellent schools, reform synagogue Peninsula Temple Sholom, Burlingame, CA - Home. $4k or less per month is kinda iffy, but there is a listing on craigslist of a home in Burlingame up in the hills (mills estates) & near the synagogue that is under $4k. And travel to SF by car would be around 35 minutes, or you can use bart or the train.

In Marin County:

Rodef Sholom: A Reform Jewish Congregation in Marin County, California

Excellent public schools, and a straight shot down 101 over the GGBridge to SF

This is a good idea, also Piedmont, Orinda, Lafayette, Moraga. $4,000 is a healthy sum for rent even by our standards.

mfelix, you could also cut down your commute and look in SF proper. There are several reform temples around the City, and there is a huge JCC on California Street that has a lot of really great activities. Are you interested in city life or more suburban areas?

Actually, I would prefer to live outside SF. I have 2 children 10 and 8 years old and not sure how the school system is in SF.

Any opinions about San Carlos? I have been reading some reviews about that neighboorhod

San Carlos is fine, very family friendly and has excellent schools. The commute will not be under 40 minutes to SF though.

Would you consider living in Belmont? Not sure how large of a house you are looking for. I have a 3 BR, 2 BA, 1700 sqft home on a cul-de-sac for rent now. Let me know if you are interested. You can preview the Belmont House for rent (http://tinyurl.com/yzg55ng - broken link) .

Thanks for your time.

If I were you, I would live in a town that has a synagogue nearby. Lafayette has a large reform synagogue with around 900 members. Its called Temple Isiah. There is also a BART station which takes 30 min. to get to downtown SF, and it has top schools in the state. Marin is also a good option, but has no train.
