I may be accepting a job at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto. Can anyone suggest a safe place to live with a 20 minute commute to the hospital? Know of any apartments that will also accept a golden retriever, 55 pounds? Will appreciate all replies.

There are lots of apartments along Arastradero Rd near the VA hospital. Here's an example:

Almost anything within a 20 min commute would be in a safe area. Just avoid East Palo Alto and parts of east Menlo Park. It would help if you mentioned what your budget is. I assume you are looking for a 1 BR?

Thanks to all that replied, it is a starting point for me, at least I now know where to look and avoid.

Palo Alto is right by the Dumbarton Bridge, so essentially, a 20 minute commute can come from a bunch of places. I have a couple of friends who work at the VA and we all live in the Tri-City area. The commute is usually ~20 minutes for them (+ $4 for toll, however)

On a literary note, Ken Kesey worked there, which is where he got his inspiration for writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

What zitsky said.

I would tend to like to live west of El Camino, if possible.

But that area is all good except East Palo Alto and the area east of the railroad tracks.
