LA is where to be for a serious film career... but if you want a beautiful city to be inspired, SF may fit the bill... but another suggestion is Vancouver, BC. They're considered Hollywood North and they also have beautiful landscapes which rival SF.

Its not in California, but Austin has a big, and growing, film industry.

yea, joe, everybody keeps saying that. i guess that warrants a trip down to check it out. or at least a trip over to the austin forums. from what little i do know about austin, it seems that it's a hotspot for recent college grads, which is helping to spur on rapid economic growth. it was designated as one of the best places to go for college grads after graduation (by forbes, methinks?).

Austin was doing very well, but the recession is catching up to it. When the recession first started Austin's economy was booming. This jobs led to an influx of people, mostly from California, and now Austin is gaining 50k new residents a year driving the unemployment rate higher.

As, for the film industry. Well several movies were filmed in Austin, and there are animation studies here too. Right now machete is being filmed in the Austin area. A few years back there were plans to build a second hollywood in Travis county, but the city of Austin wanted this project to be built within Austin city limits to increase its tax revenue so the thing came apart. There are still plans to build a second hollywood somewhere between Austin and Dallas.
