Hello! I'm moving to San Rafael at the end of the month and I've begun my job search. From what I've read, I'm thinking that the Larkspur ferry to downtown SF would be the easiest commute. Is there any area that I should completely rule out in regards to jobs? (Oakland, Hercules, San Bruno) I just want to understand where I should be applying for jobs and what to expect. I'm open to driving to work but it sounds like most would rather stick needles under their toenails. Any advice or info is much appreciated. THANKS!

If you are working in SF you can also ride Golden Gate Transit commute buses. Comfy recliner seats, reading lights, tray tables for your laptop you get the idea. Frequent schedule during am and pm commute. Many employers offer tax free commuter checks to help pay the fare.
Driving to Oakland is not many miles but involves a bridge toll and then sitting in the parking lot that is I-80 westbound. Not sure what kind of jobs you will find in Hercules as it is mainly residential - mall retail mostly. San Bruno would involve driving across the GG bridge ($6 toll) and then through SF on city streets. Best option from San Rafael would be SF financial district or downtown area.

A fair number of folks who work with me near downtown Oakland commute via car from Marin, but I have no idea how long they spend on the road.

I'd avoid having to drive over to the East Bay...the traffic and drivers truly suck over there.
I'd aim for SF proper or Marin, the drive from San Rafael to SF really isn't that bad, in the Bay Area scheme of things...timing is everything.
