A while ago I posted a thread about living in San Francisco or Marin County. Thanks to the people who have responded. After doing some more research, I'm leaning toward either San Rafael or Larkspur.

It seems like these towns are more lively than other parts of Marin. There's the Marin Brewing Company in Larkspur which seems like a nice place to meet up with friends. Having a social life will be important to me... It also seems like there are good, modern condos/apartments to rent in both towns.

Can anyone please tell me what it's like living in San Rafael vs. Larkspur? Also, is there a dog park that's easily accessible from either place?

Thanks!

San Rafael is a much bigger town than Larkspur. I think Larkspur only has a few thousand people living there and a couple streets of shops. I know San Rafael has a revived down town area...just dont live in the Canal district in SR. It is a ghetto.

I've heard about the Canal District! I will steer away from it. Thanks! I'm going to schedule a trip to NoCal soon to look for a good place to live. Does anyone have experience with Highlands of Marin or Deer Valley apt complex? So far it seems like Deer Valley has the best reviews (from a website that rates apartments).

It would be a tough choice. Although Larkspur is less of a "city" and more of a "town" versus San Rafael, I think it's a high quality place. Proximity to the Ferry and the convenience of being right at Sir Francis Drake Blvd and therefore easy access to Kentfield, et al, might actually make Larkspur a compelling choice. Plus the shopping.
