... and would be open to suggestions. The basics:
-Dec 21-31
-4 people, married couple plus two kids, 15 and 19 (both girls)
-want to go budget, which would point to one hotel room with two queens or something like that. We have vacationed this way before so it's not like the girls will be put out, and we have learned to manage privacy/modesty issues well.
- would like to visit Carmel area, Marin/Napa area, and East Bay. 3, 3 and 4 days respectively (stay in these locations but visit SF city itself during one or more of these), because one thing we'll try to do is understand/scope out some homes with an eye to relocating here (see my other thread here if you'd like to know more).
- In the past we've liked the corporate style of hotels - Marriott, etc. But also recall a couple of charming places (Carmel was one in fact, a long time ago and don't recall the name) where we had a good time as well.

Could you please let me have suggestions for boarding, inexpensive ways/places to eat (we are VERY flexible in this regard, even drop into grocery stores and buy a prepared deli sandwich on sale if nothing else shows up), and points of interest beyond the usual suspects (we toured the area over 10 years ago and had the best time).

For boarding, we are a little less flexible (but still want to spend low!). Clean and quiet though basically does it. A good night's rest untroubled by disturbances is a high priority).

Hope you can help!

When I travel, I do that also. I sometimes eat out of supermarkets, buying sandwiches and salads from the deli or eat at a food court in a downtown mall. When in SF, go to the food court at Westfield mall located at Market and Powell Sts. The cable car turnaround and BART/Muni subway station are there and Union Square is 2 blocks away. The food here is a little more upscale than most mall food - no McDonalds or Hot Dog-on-a-Stick places here.

Do you mean as in the leaf of a banana or is that the name of a restaurant? If the latter it sounds like it could be fun. If the former I don't like those, too chewy.
