Advertisements

I am planning to move to SF with my boyfriend. I work in advertising and am confident about finding a job, but we are having a harder time with finding him one.

He has worked in advertising as well, but has spent the last three years as the General Manager of the Online Arm of Columbia/Aware Records. (While running his own small artist management firm out of our house)
Does anyone know details about the music industry in SF or could connect me with someone who does? I have google'd. I have researched all of the venues in the area- from large music halls to ultra-popular bar venues... but can't find much about any record labels, artist management, music industry publications, or.... I know they MUST exist in such an alive cultural environment like SF...
Simply. Help?!

Actually, you'd be surprised that even though SF has a lively music scene, it doesn't have a music genre per se. Seeing what you both do, it almost sounds like LA might be better because it does have both of those industries. You're right- the advertising industry here is very strong.

One alternative might be Austin TX because that city also has a decent advertising industry and a fairly robust music industry though it caters more towards country, alt country, rock, and more in that genre. The added bonus is that Austin costs about 1/3rd as much as it does in SF.

LA is the center of the music industry. Aside from NYC, anywhere else in the country is going to be slim pickens. Perhaps he could look at something music-related in the tech sector? I'm sure there are some cool music-related startups in Silicon Valley.

You might also want to consider Nashville. The music industry there is the 2nd largest in the country, only slightly less than NYC.

From Wikipedia:

"Since the 1960s, Nashville has been the second biggest music production center (after New York) in the U.S.[18] As of 2006, Nashville's music industry is estimated to have a total economic impact of $6.4 billion per year and to contribute 19,000 jobs to the Nashville area.[19]"

So in reality, this might be a good pick, not to mention it is actually a very nice city that costs 1/4th of that of LA.

Sorry- but Silicon Valley doesn't have a happenin' Music scene. Sounds like you want to move to SF no matter what and regardless of if it actually makes sense since you didn't really comment on other alternative suggestions. So just got for it and move here anyway.

Not sure what you mean by that exactly. Where do you live now? Is your only reason to move to be with your BF? I guess I'd look at it from a rather base perspective. SF and California cities are pretty transient places. Most people move in, get serious, get married, and if they decide to have a family they move out. So even if you moved there and didn't find exactly what you were looking for professionally, you'll probably move later anyway. There is a fairly diverse job market and if you're good, you can make decent money. So you'll probably be fine. But to be honest, the area isn't a musical haven for record companies. I still think Nashville or even Austin would be more economically viable choices.

How cute. Not sure if you really proved anything, but if that's your only lame way of trying to make a point then I guess I'll be polite and play along too.
