Hello,

Looking for some suggestions for living in SF proper.

Daughter is moving to SF for school/job. She has spent life in Milwaukee WI area. She is smart but a bit idealistic about people/situations.

She has a room in mission district part of city.

Any pointers on safety, money mgmt, people or habits she should know to make her adventure safe and enjoyable? SF seems to be a very open place. I would think it is safe as long as she uses common sense.

Thx for any advice you can offer

What part of the mission District is she moving to? The mission is big, and you'll get better answers if you're more specific.

Her apt is on Florida St.
S of 16 th and N of C. Chavez Army St.

Don't think is it the greatest area. Hope it is not terrible.

It's a transitional area. Twenty years ago I would have told you to panic. Now it's not as bad. My wife and I routinely go out to dinner in places a few blocks away from there. Gentrification is spreading. All of that said, she should think long term about areas further to the southwest (but still in the Mission). Of course, yes, the rent would be higher ...

The area is changing, yes. BUT, I personally wouldn't want my daughter's first experience to be the Mission area, it can be very intimidating and unsafe if you aren't use to that type of area. During the day the area primarily in the winter time is fine, but as the summer & evening rolls in you get all kinds of people there and that might be too much for your daughter to handle. Things are changing but not that quickly. I'm not sure if you are more concerned with your budget and that is why or how you guys came up with the Mission area?

Give us more information, like what is your budget and what type of environment she is use to and wouldn't mind living in. We need more to give better advice.

that is not a great area, but it depends on your daughter. If i were going to live in the mission i would be above Mission (Valencia, Guerrero, Fair Oaks, Dolores) and between 18th and 25th.

As someone else said, this is a more expensive area. What is the budget?

Valencia's the border between the gentrified Mission (closer to the Castro and Noe Valley) and the ungentrified Mission. Of course west of Valencia will be more expensive than east of Valencia. And I'd live north of 18th - nothing wrong with the area where the Mission borders Duboce Triangle and the Castro at all.

Between 18th and 25th would put you closer to where the Mission borders Noe Valley rather than the Castro.

Florida St looks nice enough in street view, but most of SF does. Homicide map shows a lot of activity close to Cesar Chavez / Florida in the past few years, but none anywhere near, say, 20th / Florida. But it's going to matter less where she lives and more where she actually hangs out which will determine whether she's safe.

Money management isn't hard in the city if you are just renting a room. I am guessing she's probably going to pay less than $1000 a month for the privilege; even a minimum wage job should be OK as the minimum wage is much higher in SF than it is in Milwaukee, though she should aim for better.
