Myself and a friend (age 25/24)are moving from the Sacramento Area down to the Bay Area. He's going to UC Berkeley and I'm working in Concord. Just hoping to get some advice/suggestions on reasonably priced housing in or between those two places near BART. Crime rates, Cost, ease of commute are of main concern, would be nice to have a bit of night life. we'd prefer a house with a garage, but aren't really going to be picky. I'd appreciate any insight, thanks.

This is always hard to answer because nothing here is really "Affordable" or "Reasonable". What is the range you're willing to spend?

Exactly. Affordable would be a nice 4 bed 2 bath 2,000 square foot home for under $300,000 like the majority of the U.S. Obviously that's not happenin here. What is your budget?

Yup, can't help you unless you tell us what your budget is.

I hope it's around $1500 for a two bedroom. You're not going to find anything cheaper than that.
