I remember decades ago Berkeley had the craziest, most tenant friendly rent control in the country. Then at the beginning of the 1990's a series of reforms began which gradually moved rental laws in favor of landlords.

What are rents like nowadays in Berkeley? Is affordable housing a reality anywhere in the East Bay? Take a studio or 1 bedroom as examples.

It all depends on where in Berkeley/Oakland you are talking about. Check Craigslist.com for current rents.

Berkeley got rid of it's rent control almost completely in the mid 90's and is now one of the more expensive cities in the Bay Area as far as rents go unfortunately.

Yeah, I got that sense just with a quick browsing of craigslist ads. It's unfortunate as Berkeley is or was one of the last holdouts from you know when...

Even the politicko writings on the walls of Top Dog are increasingly leaning to the political right...what the????

That's it, Top Dog is the last stand!

The rental rights in Berkeley still lean heavily towards the tenant rather than the landlord however, even if the old rent control stuff has been phased out.

Rofl berkeley has rent control, have you people ever even lived in Berkeley?

Guide to Berkeley Rent Control - City of Berkeley, CA
Home Page: Rent Stabilization Board - City of Berkeley, CA

If you don't know whats going on, its not good to simply make things up.

Furthermore, as an alumni of CAL, I can attest to the fact that it is rent control, and its artificial ceiling that cause bases pricesto be so high. If landlords were allowed to charge market value for their rentals prices would be much lower. A slum would be affordable and a wealthy area would not. Instead of slums being semi -unaffordable too.

I have albeit not for ages but I know the city very well and still have relatives there. The renting situation changed in Berkeley when rent control was all but abolished. I think they they still have some remnant of it there but it does little good for anyone.

Prices are definitely going up in Berkeley. I looked at some complexes there that were trying to rent out 2-bedrooms for $2700 / month... and people were paying it!

Yep. Lived in Berkeley for 7 years as a homeowner not a renter and know many owners, renters and landlords there.

Just because you graduated from Cal doesn't make you an expert on rental properties or on the word "alumni"(unless of course you are more than one person)
And here I thought Cal. was a better than average school
furthermore to be a decent and fair landlord in Berkeley is to torture oneself.

it's a great place to own real estate to live in, (college towns are generally a great investment) and then you happily move away but that's about it....
