...especially in Berkeley or SF.

I'm trying to eat healthier these days and would like to sample some of the fare in the bay area. Hopefully in the affordable range for a lunch or dinner. Look forward to your responses!

The most popular raw vegan place is Cafe Gratitude. Personally, I think they're overpriced (and the service usually sucks) but the food is good and it's affordable (but not cheap.) There's one in Berkeley and one in San Francisco. If you ever want to splash out, try Millenium in San Francisco.

Yeah, I read some reviews and it seems that place is crazy expensive and part of some odd pyramid scheme. I might try it anyway. It seems a bit challenging to find an affordable vegan meal in the bay.

There's another vegan (not raw vegan) place called Herbivore in San Francisco, on Valencia. Less $$ than Gratitude and not so cult-like. Went there once years ago and wasn't crazy about the food, but it might have been an off night. If you like Chinese, try out Big Lantern or Jasmine Tea House, both in the Mission-- they'll make anything "chicken" on the menu with fake chicken if you ask.

The good ones are in Oakland. Souley Vegan is very good.

Souley Vegan

Manzanita is macrobiotic.

Manzanita Restaurant. Organic Vegan Macrobiotic Cuisine.

Gracias Madre is in the Mission district. Same owners as Cafe Gratitude. It is newly opened and I have not tried it yet, looks like it has potential.

Central Vegetarian Cuisine is a Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant in Alameda with some very delicious food. I recommend them. They make the best faux meat I've ever had, but they have other things on the menu too if that's not your style. I have yet to try anything there that wasn't amazing. They can also make anything on the menu vegan if you request it.

There's another place located in Berkeley that's similar to Central Vegetarian called the Long Life Vegi House. It's not AS good, but it's still quite good and they're wicked wicked cheap. Especially their lunch specials--$4.55 a plate.
