I grew up in the Bay Area and first heard people from L.A. say 'hella' when I was at UC Berkeley in 1991. I assumed it was a SoCal thing. I never heard anyone say it until then. Later, I find out it's a NorCal thing. Hm. Who knows who first said it, and where?

This anecdote will be spread amongst us SoCal residents. Now we have all the right to claim it as ours. Mwahahahhaah

I still don't say it, even if more and more of my friends do.

LOL
It has a strange way of rubbing off on people doesn't it? Even if you're across the world from NorCal.

I managed to get it stuck into the vocabulary of some cousins in Rhode Island, after only 2 weeks of exposure. It's like people need hazmat suits to stay safe from our highly infectious slang. They start saying it eventually even if they hate it.

The first time I heard the word used was around 1993. Never cared for it and it was probably the first sign that I was transitioning into an age where I would be considered "middle aged." Thank God.

So glad I run in circles where I never hear the word used.
