I would like to see the Bay Area and the surrounding cities such as Oakland and San Jose. I want to see if I would like living in SF. Do I need a car or can I use public transportation to get around?

I suppose you could visit the Bay Area with public transit. Each county has its own transit (bus) system. In San Francisco, it's Muni; Samtrans in San Mateo county; VTA in Santa Clara county and it's A-C Transit in the east bay. You can google them for further info.

As for trains, there is:
caltrain.com - home
BART - Bay Area Rapid Transit

There is also some ferry boat service:
East Bay Ferries
Golden Gate Ferry (for ferries to Marin county)

You could do it, but if you could find yourself spending hours on public transit. Going from SF to Oakland and San Jose isn't too bad. What other places do you plan to see? Not all will have good public transportation.

Bart will take you to quite a few places, but I think I'd rent a car.......

Take 280 to San Jose.....it's a prettier drive.......

OP, having a car would make it much easier for you to see places like Muir Woods (hiking), Pacifica/Santa Cruz (beach) or Napa/Sonoma (wineries). I'd echo Wurzig's comment. If you drive, Highway 280 is a very nice way to get from San Francisco to areas south. You'll be looking at beautiful hills and a reservoir, instead of miles and miles of office buildings.
