We're looking for a two bedroom apartment around 1000 sf that is quiet and in a good area. Any ideas? We are unable to come out and look for an apartment before we move there.

Have you looked on craigslist? You can also do a google maps search of the address and see the neighborhood.

I'm not sure what you mean by "two blocks away from the lake is pretty hoodie" - the southwest corner of the lake is near some grittier places (higher crime), but I know people who live there and while they're wary, they're perfectly happy with their locale. International Blvd. has some prostitution/drug issues, but I've driven down it many times without witnessing either (only place I've seen a prostitute lately is in South Berkeley, near San Pablo).

I live near the Lake, and I'm frequently accosted by friendly people who insist on saying hello, am forced to drink delicious coffee at the independent coffee shop on the corner, and am subjected to a large, diverse crowd every Saturday morning at the farmer's market, where I am frequently tempted to purchase fresh produce and creamy, amazing cheese. It's pretty horrible.

Teasing aside, check out Cleveland Heights, Ivy Hill, Adam's Point, Uptown, downtown, or Grand Lake. Just be wary of getting a place in one of the concrete monsters - they tend to be less attractive, and charge higher rents, than the smaller apartment buildings.
