I am aware that most of the rioters were not from Oakland (see my post regarding anarchist website riot-inciters), however many of the peaceful protesters were. I was just pointing out to the other poster why there would be a lot of attention around this case, and less obvious attention around other killings that happen in Oakland.

Yup.

The vast majority of those arrested for inciting violence and looting were not Oakland residents.

I believe the Police Chief called them "Professional Anarchists".

The attention comes from the rarity of the event. Cop kills unarmed civilian. When an innocent person is killed in Oakland it gets attention and there are marches also. But the pleas are to those doing the killing who aren't listening. With this at least the cops listen or pretend to so this doesn't happen again. Police don't like this sort of thing on their reputation.

I'm not disagreeing - we're basically saying the same thing in different ways. He was wondering at the 'irony' of the attention around this event, and the reasons I think are fourfold: 1) as you say, the rarity, 2) the fact that it is an institutional killing, rather than one borne of complicated cultural factors, 3) the willingness of people at the institution-level to listen to complaints, as opposed to those who would turn a deaf ear, and 4) protests over other killings are more sad/sedate and therefore garner less attention in the media, therefore part of it is only a perception that demonstrations do not happen, when in fact they do.

I have been linking sources that show that it wasn't just "white anarchist wearing bandannas" causing trouble in the city.

Pictures are worth a 1000 words, do any of these people look white to you?

Looks like the guys wearing bandannas are black too.

I've read what's being reported in the "rag tag" eblogs like East Bay Express that you've chosen to cite, and I'm saying the REALITY of the situation isn't being reported. Whether that's due to some liberal agenda to try and not criminalize blacks unfairly in the media, or some other reason, it's obvious that it wasn't "all white kids with bandannas" causing the chaos. A lot of it was caused by black Oakland residents.

But they don't tell the whole story.

Actually look closely at your own pics.

There is a white man in the first pic and at least 2 white people, maybe three in the third one.
