That family has a mini empire. The daughters opened Bowl'd and I believe Spoon is theirs as well. Maybe the parents were ready to retire.

Tribune article on bars and restaurants are becoming too saturated in Uptown and the need for retail in Uptown
Downtown Oakland: Rocsil's Shoes makes way for beer and empanada bar - Inside Bay Area

The article mentions a bar and empanada place replacing the shoe store at 1701 Telegraph. It also mentions Township being under construction at 1545 Broadway, a black-box theater called Flight Deck moving next door to Township and a bar moving into the ground floor of the Cathedral Building.

I agree. I live restaurants, don't get me wrong but to build all day street life we need stores open all day long. Preferably condensed into a single few blocks. This is why popuphood is working but I don't see any ideal parcels in uptown that would work. 17th has potential, as it is quite picturesque, but those stores are all closed on the weekend.

The reason commercial districts like grand, lakeshore, Rockridge, and piedmont ave do so well is the mixed uses that deliver all day traffic. Even more yoga studios, and more non bar/nightlife oriented eateries would help. Way too many new places targeting $15-25 entrees for dinner. Where can you grab a quick snack or slice?

Good place to start would be more residents. Uptown hasn't added any in five years. We can't keep adding and sustaining bars and restaurants forever without adding population.

This isn't exactly business development news but I thought this would be interesting to post- a song was recently produced by a local singer called "Holiday in Oakland". Read about it here:

Well, that was nice. Good visuals, too. Was half expecting something like "Holiday in Cambodia" with a slag reel.

Anyone know whatever happened to this place? www.601citycenter.com

It's still a big hole in the ground right as you enter downtown oakland (talk about an eye sore). I thought office space was on fire these days, what's the developer waiting for?

Am I the only one who thinks the music video for REM's "Shiny Happy People" looks like Oakland? At least in the sense of the diversity and the city scene painted on the backdrop?

No, I am sure it is an idealized ATL. Those pics aren't really diverse, probably a lot like the racial mix in ATL. REM was the consummate indie college band, and back then they hadn't really made the rounds as a band outside of the south. That album was their breakout.

Yeah, it probably is an idealized ATL since I read on Wikipedia just now that their band is from Georgia. But coming from SF, it just visually reminds me of Oakland. I don't really see though how those pics are not diverse? There are many different racial groups and ages of people dancing in the video, especially at the end when everyone is dancing at the same time. That is more or less, how I perceive Oakland. Before in SF, I mainly just saw whites and asians with occasional latin americans. All pretty much in the age groups of 20-40. Now I see children, teens, adults of so many different ethnic backgrounds and intermixing. It is really great.
