Hung out at Plank for a while today. It's nice.

They definitely have some kinks to work out (bartenders are pretty clueless), but it's a great place to hang out on a nice day and grab a beer, or to play some games if you're into it. It's a welcome addition to the neighborhood, along with Jack's.

City Ventures to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in West Oakland development.

Quote:
Kerr expects to start construction in the spring on the first phase of 171 for-sale townhomes and five commercial condominiums along Wood Street in West Oakland between 14th and 16th streets....

The company also has signed agreements to buy two neighboring development sites totaling not quite 5 acres from nonprofit Bridge Housing and is negotiating the purchase of a fourth housing site in the same Central Station district, Kerr said.

That's hard to believe. They've been massacred on Yelp.

I went and it was sadly on the end of what I feared. The budget baller crowd was out in force. A white dude with a chinstrap behind me in the line (yep) was complaining about how Oakland clubs don't let him in with his Jordans. Sigh.

I suppose it fills a niche, just not one I understand. I left and went down the street to the new oyster bar which was quite good.

Jack's is great.

Plank really depends on what time you go. If you show up on a Friday or Saturday night, the crowd is going to suck. If it's during the day or before the dinner rush, it's a totally different experience/vibe. Kinda like going to the Jack London Cinema on a Sunday night when tix are $5- NOPE. Or like showing up at Make Westing on a Friday night or right after a huge show at the Fox lets out- NOPE.

Shorenstein seeks right to turn Oakland office project into housing

Quote:
The owner of the largest proposed office tower that's under construction in Oakland – 601 City Center – wants the right to convert all or part of the stalled project to housing...

"They know they can't make the office tower work anymore. It's not viable anymore, so they want to do something," Flynn said. "The question is what would be the terms of the agreement to change the land use and change the schedule."
