Uber shakes up real estate market with massive purchase of Oakland's former Sears building
Quote:
Uber Technologies Inc. will open a large office in Oakland, taking all of the workspace in the refurbished Sears building that will open in two years, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.
The deal gives Uber all 330,000 square feet of the building. Uber made the deal official Wednesday morning, announcing it bought the building from Lane Partners, the building's owner, for an undisclosed price.

  • Co-headquarters of Uber, along with San Francisco
  • 2000-3000 workers in the building

Uber will expand headquarters to Oakland, buys former downtown Sears building - San Jose Mercury News

This is just great news. I'm waiting to see the spillover effect in Uptown, and the greater CBD. 2000+ tech workers in the Uptown area. Retail will follow undoubtedly. What's going to be the extent of the Uber deal impact? Can it catalyze the construction of the three residential high-rise towers, and other residential low-rises and mid-rises, centered in and around Uptown. Further migration of companies into the CBD. Growth of companies already incubating here. The only major spaces for companies looking for a substantial footprint are the entitled and approved 1100 Broadway and 601 City Center. That's 1 million square feet of office towers waiting to capture anchor tenants.

This is just great news. I'm waiting to see the spillover effect in Uptown, and the greater CBD. The creation and migration of other companies (small, medium, large) in the area. Increased foot traffic, increased retail. The construction of the three high-rise residential towers in Uptown, as well as other residential units.
There is one million square feet of office space approved and entitled in the form of two office towers waiting for anchor tenants. 1110 Broadway. 601 City Center.
Greater DTO will be a marvelous place in a decade. Full of life and energy. Now, we just need to underground 880 between JLS and tear down 980.

That's a terrible idea, putting a cap and park on top of it would be cool though.

I agree. I'm not a fan of Uber's ways of doing business, but this should be a big boost for the surrounding area.

I agree Downtown Oakland will be great in a decade but I think too many of the empty lots downtown are being entitled for housing (versus commercial/office). I know that it's difficult to build new office buildings in Oakland because the market doesn't command enough.

However, so many of these surface lots in prime downtown locations are being entitled for residential. In the end, there might not be much available land for commercial (especially in the core of downtown). For example, 1900 Broadway, 1911 Telegraph, and 1700 Webster (and many others) are all in the heart of downtown and will become apartments/condos - as they have been entitled to residential builders.

True. But there are still a lot surface lots left downtown. 1100 Broadway and 601 City Center (1 million square feet of office space) has to show signs of life before any developer begins thinking about office towers again.
