i'm for development in oakland but these chinatown hi rises run into problems.there are not any supermarkets nearby and the generally the type of people who want to buy chicken feet and live fish in chinatown don't want the amenities they put in these buildings.walk in closet ? masterbath? waste of space. 3 bedrooms and 1 bath is better for the extended family.

the eight orchid was a disaster.

and i'm still po'd about the emerald views development not being developed

8 Orchids was a disaster because it was overpriced. The building is pretty good, but it is in a slightly weird location. Lots of the new development in downtown came onto the market right when the downturn started, the slow sales are to be expected.

I think Chinatown is a perfect place for development, targeting Asian people or not. It is close to BART and existing transit infrastructure. There is currently a goood deal of density there already. Soon enough the Jack London Market will open and Whole Foods isn't far. In 5 years it will be one of the most popular areas in the center of Oakland.

What's with the ornamentation on top? Not an appealing project at all.

I don't understand this.

There are plenty of supermarkets around here. This project sits directly across the street from a Chinese supermarket, New Tin's Market. New Tin's is the biggest supermarket in Oakland Chinatown is pretty comprehensive and clean/friendly for a Chinatown market. Check it out. Not just chicken feet and live fish. I probably wouldn't mind doing most of my shopping there.

If you want a Western supermarket, Smart and Final would be the closest but I'm guessing most of the buyers of these condos (if it ever gets built) will be Cantonese.

maybe i was not clear .
i agree that mostly cantonese will want to buy a condo in this area. the problem is the condo will likely not be designed for this market. extended family units are common in this culture and a 1 or 2 bedroom apt with a large master bath and guest bath and huge walk in closet does not work for this family unit a three bedroom with smaller closet and smaller bath would be more desirable. i have a friend raised in the US who bought a condo in hong kong and he updated it by removing bedrooms and made a large master bath and walk in closet.everyone tells him now it will be impossible to sell the condo later because no one wants that stuff instead they want a bedroom for grandma.the people who built 8 orchid did not understand this.

i often go to New Tin's market the prices are very good and there is parking BUT for most people used to safeway and lucky's(with the vegetable mister and the shiny fruit that is removed when bruised or going bad ) new tins is too different.the fruit is in boxes outside and if it gets old they lower the price instead of throwing it out so you have to hunt through the boxes of fruit and veggies and rarely is it organic.

i have feeling these high rise units will be designed for the same type of people who live at 100 grand another recent hi rise residential development.
but look what's within a few blocks from 100 grand:
Bart
whole foods
lukas
ozumos
pican
plum
vos
mua
nex

the chinatown units should be designed for cantonese families not urban seensters who want organic fruit ,grass fed beef and fine dining but the profit margins are better with the seensters so i see a building that in the end is not appealing to people who want to live in chinatown.

Despite Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy proceeding, the Oak Knoll Naval base will be razed to the ground to make room for real estate development, including 962 homes and 82,000 sq ft. of retail space.

Apparently Fresh and Easy and Foods Co. are opening stores throughout the Bay Area. Foods Co. intends on building supermarkets at 66th and San Leandro and on Seminary and Foothill. It doesn't look like Fresh and Easy has anything on slate for Oakland yet. I remember they were planning on a supermarket in deep East Oakland at one point. Sorry if this has already been covered.

I hear ya. Yuppies from SF, or elsewhere, aren't likely to do the majority of their grocery shopping at New Tin's (even though I happen to like the place.)

We'll see if this gets off the ground at all.

She is really surprising me with her support of big projects. Just what we needed.
