Great comments. Especially on the parking tickets. Oakland tickets are ridiculously expensive. I don't have an issue with meters, but I have received tickets that were complete BS.

The Grand Lake Theater parking issues? Really, I think that is BS. The only day it could be problematic is on Saturday afternoon. Maybe they need something else to attract people to see movies at the small screen place. I skip Lakeshore/Grand for movies because of the food options at dinner. The places I am really excited about are either too expensive or too crowded, so bad fit for a night at the movies.

I actually don't have any issues with parking, except on Saturday during the farmer's market, but even then you can usually park on Trestle Glen without too much trouble. I've never gotten a parking ticket (knock on wood) because I always park under the freeway or in the TJ's parking lot, I only park on the street at night. Jade, if you're looking for something less pricey for dinner, definitely check out Cana for Cuban, the new Greek place on Grand (forget its name), the newly opened Kwik Way burger place next to the theater, Mijori for sushi (you can put your name in and browse the bookstore if you come during prime time, it dies down around 8:30 if you're a late diner), Holy Land for middle eastern (they have a delicious lentil soup), or Arizmendi for pizza. It's such a pretty theater, and I love the organ player.

Cana looks good, but not fun on a chilly day.

One day I parked in the TJs lot, and narrowly averted a ticket. Some security guard came around and said "2 hour parking limit." I think we had brunch (there was a wait) and walked to 2 stores, it was about 2.5 hours that day. Pretty annoying.

I tend to avoid the farmers market. There seems to be a narrow window of opportunity, you need to go between shifts of market visitors. :P

I always thought the parking issue was sort of overrated. Oakland is still kind of spoiled when it comes to parking. This is why I thought a streetcar would be better served on Grand rather than aligning with an existing BART train. Atleast have it intersect with a BART station but having it along transit rich Broadway is overkill and quite frankly useless.

The Broadway corridor is ideal for a streetcar because:
1. it is under-utilized
2. It is well served by all forms of transit transit: buses, BART, freeway
3. It would connect Downtown and Uptown with the already established Piedmont Ave area to form a contiguous strip
4. It is ideal for the smart growth plans
5. It is centrally located and a great location for a retail district

Although the Grand corridor is well connected to downtown, I agree it needs more transit options. But it feels pretty contiguous compared with the Broadway corridor.

I was over there the other day, and was puzzed because it looked like people were driving through. Oakland Local's got the scoop and it sounds like there are lines, and a big menu.
