Also land in downtown Oakland is FAR from dirt cheap. That's part of our problem, our land costs almost as much as in sf and to most developers they aren't going to pay that for land they feels is much less desirable and will return far less on their investment. The port will do fine because as long as china produces we still need to import, further more because California exports so much food the port will be a viable economic engine, as long as the port stays on top of its game and technology which it does a good job at doing.

Downtown Oakland is a key piece of the regional Bay Area plan (PLan Bay Area) since it is already an existing transit hub. A slightly longer term vision is needed for Oakland to lure more company headquarters. I definitely think that DTO could be a pretty good regional job center, but Oakland needs a couple more high profile wins for that to happen.

Downtown would be a great job center, its easier to get to than pretty much anywhere else in the area it has a highly educated populous around it and it has plenty of character and history to build on. We just need people with vision to build on it.

they need to rethink oaklands zoning the reason land is so expensive to build tall buildings on is because most of our land is zoned for housing more space needs to be zoned for highrises nothing tall will ever go up around lake merritt even though they are like .000000000001 miles away from central business district also we need to expand east reduce suburban and increase urban also like i said before sf is running out of space oakland has plenty only thing keeping up land prices for highrises is zoning

I would also prefer it be a light rail. Just from an image perspective its better for a city that has a significant image problem. But hey at least its something for us.

I think at this stage, BRT makes sense for this corridor. I'd rather see a LRT to connect all the downtown (and downtown adjacents) areas.

The new Chase on Broadway where there old Walgreen's used to be is coming along nicely. I'm glad they uncovered the windows on the street that had been covered up by the Walgreen's.

Poor Oakland, SF is building another mall making it less and less likely Oakland will ever be able to obtain the retail critical mass it needs to get a successful destination retail area anywhere near downtown. I really hope we can get something together but unless we pimp part of the city out to a developer we are out of luck.
