Either way is a compromise.. better neighborhood and home with an aneurysm-inducing commute, better commute but lousier house, or spend 150% of your income on your mortgage. Let's say I can't mentally handle a long commute and my finances are limited, so what can I do?

Silcone Valley? It might be a stretch but there are a few places in the area listed under 400k, some more under 500k. Would you be willing to rent out your house for some...uh, video shoots from time to time? Van Nuys might work...
