I have received a job offer as a software engineer in Santa Clara paying $120K a year. I am moving from White Plains, NY where I pay $1900 a month renting a nice 1 bedroom condo with a lot amenities. Would it be reasonable to expect to get a quiet, good quality 1 BR apartment rental, in a reasonably nice area, for about the same amount (plus/minus $300) within 10-12 miles of Santa Clara ? I would like to avoid a commute of more than 30 minutes on average. If so, can you recommend 2-3 specific apartment complexes which stand out ? Thank you.

I'm also in the process of planning a move from the NYC area to the bay area, i dont think you'll have a problem finding something around the same price as white plains. I don't actually know any places, but from my search it seems pretty reasonable.
Just our of curiosity, when is your move planned?

There are a few places on Craigslist right now in Santa Clara - homes included. I would check there. Santa Clara is not that big, but I'm assuming you're going to be in North Santa Clara. Maybe you can check out the Rivermark area.

Eta... Rivermark is in San Jose but borders the Santa Clara border where a lot of high tech/semi conductor/etc companies are.

avaloncommunities.com - gated, nicer, high end stuff - I think cahill park or mountain view would be closest.

I lived one town over from you (Mamaroneck) and now live one town over from your new location (San Jose). You'll easily find a nice rental for that price provided you don't have pets...my GF used to live near Rivermark, pretty dead over there. If you want something with a little downtown (like White Plains has) look near downtown San Jose or Sunnyvale....neither are far from Santa Clara and have lots of apartment options...good luck...
