and I've seen some pretty nice homes SOLD in your price range since January 2011 .

I wouldn't have believed it myself had I not seen it with my own eyes, but here's one that just closed June 17th 2011 for $875K. Even though it's a townhome (which some folks don't like), it's absolutely beautiful and in a fantastic part of Los Gatos to boot (imho) -

125 N MILL Crk, Los Gatos, CA 95032 | MLS# 81110712

If I get the time to go back and search through some past files for SOLDS, I'll post them here, but I think that you'll be surprised what is available in your price range in Los Gatos if you've got the dough and can qualify for a loan .

p.s.
I am NOT a Realtor. None of my family members are Realtors. And I do NOT make any money giving advice (yet ). Donations are always accepted though !

I think craiglist is THE place to find housing in this area. You can also check hotpads.com.

Stay away from East Palo Alto is what I kept hearing.

What about Mountain View? There are a few newer home communities there. I drove past a brand-new one (maybe on Miramonte? Anyone?) the other day that stated it was all solar!

Mountain View is very nice, except for some of the northern areas (I think around 101 is where the sketchy part is, can someone else confirm that or not?)

It is sketchy for Mountain View, but I wouldn't exactly call it sketchy overall. The crime rate overall in Mtn View is exceedingly low (maybe 1 murder every 2 years). There's nothing in Mtn View anywhere along the lines of Richmond, Oakland, East San Jose, Bayshore/Hunters Point, etc.

Ack! Once again, San Jose and SF have their bad neighborhoods specified, but Oakland gets a bad rap as an entire city. Oakland's reputation is so bad, but it's just like the other cities -- good neighborhoods, bad neighborhoods.
