I spoke with my friend and he was actually recommending Dublin/Pleasanton
Seems too far for a reasonable commute to the South Bay.

Hm, well i checked out Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont today. Dublin seems like a bunch of higher end outdoor strip malls and fairly sparse. Kinda boring maybe, i dunno.

Fremont seems to be more of what I'm used to and the bart to SF would still be 50 minutes. Also, if I commute to SJ via I-680 at 9-9:15am, won't I be well past the rush hour anyways?

For an easy commute to SF - life in SF :-)
Then you get to do the reverse commute to SJ in 45 minutes.

Fremont to SJ via 680 would be relatively fine in the morning, but in the evening it can be stop and go until 8 pm or later.

Rush hour does NOT end at 9 am! I think the carpool lane rules are insane. Around here (Sunnyvale), 85 north is slow until 10 am almost every day. Sometimes even until 10:30.

Lots of software developers work in SV, and they tend to not be morning people. I think the old carpool lane hours were set in the days where lots of people worked for defense companies (e.g. Lockheed) which, from their military roots, started work at 7 am, but those days are pretty much gone.

I agree with suggestion of Redwood City. I don't see any advantage to your moving to East Bay. What your wife saves on the Bart commute, you will more than lose commuting south to San Jose with nine million other people trying to save money living in the East Bay.

I'll second that. A lot of folks where I work get in anywhere from 10am to 12pm, some of the engineers arrive in the afternoon and stay to 10pm
