Rent - $2000+
Gas - $4.30+ per gallon

Everything else = probably similar to where you're at now. Where are you coming from?

The above is accurate. But I'd also add that sales tax is higher at 8.25%...and likely to go higher in the future.

Let's not forget the 9.3% income tax...

Most places require you to have renters insurance. Not expensive I would say about $150/year depending on the value of your items and the area you live. Most rentals pay for sewer but you are required to pay a fee for trash, roughly $20 a month. Gas & Electric could average about $100/month depending how large your home it could be more. Water is about $50 a month....

Hope you enjoy your new home!

I also found all "services" to cost more here. Anything that is an extra like a hair salon, dog groomer, private classes for children (probably not relevant to OP), full-service restaurants. I wanted to point that out b/c I came prepared for the gas and rent but not all of the rest.

Your most expense would be rent, but it depends on what you're looking for. A house $2100+, a townhome $1900-2000, a 1-2 bdr apartment (guessing) $1600-1800, a studio?

Utilities would be partially PG&E, partially Santa Clara city, $70/month is about right.

Santa Clara is pretty central, so it's a nice commute if you work in Sunnyvale or Mountain View. Also close to Chinatown and its restaurants.

Other expenses? Depends on your preferences. If nothing upscale, then like everywhere else. Food cheaper then some places.

I lived in Santa Clara in 2007-2008.

Good point. I get a little annoyed when people say everything here is the same. The high housing and gas costs are the most noticeable, but everything else here is generally a little bit higher as well. The only exceptions are the heating/AC because of the mild climate and (maybe) health insurance because CA is a healthier than average state.

I actually found my PG&E bill to be extraordinarily high my first year here b/c of the very inefficient home. So many rentals are so old and not well-updated. Something else to consider, OP. We moved into a place with old windows...probably never insulated, heater was original from the 60s and really ineffective and inefficient.

But I guess it depends upon where you are coming from. A $300 electric bill in the summer w/ no A/C due to many electric fans, then $400 ones in the winter due to the aforementioned were much higher than I was used to!
