Tech Workers! Who here is unemployed? How long have u been out of work? Do u feel that the Bay Area is oversaturated with folks in high tech to the point were job competition is too fierce?

I haven't met any that are unemployed. I don't think the market is saturated at all right now. In fact the tech economy seems to be going along strong with a lot of demand for workers.

The "notoriously strict hiring standards" mentioned above might be true at famous places like Google, but there are so many companies around here - large and small - and many of them are hardly in the position to be picky about who they hire.

Dh keeps getting calls from headhunters though he's not looking. I take that as a good sign and a comfort to the fact we left everything to move up here where the COL makes it seem impossible to ever own a home.

Near impossible to get a Rails developer, be it on LinkedIn, Dice, in university posting boards or via recruiters (with or without salary range). Everybody seems to have a job, be content with older programming languages, or is busy programming iOs and Android apps. And the dearth of candidates is everywhere, not just in the bay area. I find it very difficult to believe that programmers would stay unemployed more than a week these days. IT, that's maybe a different story.

It is hard to keep a job at Apple.

They can be kind of picky, you know.

This thread seems odd to me as the H1B1 limits were recently lifted - there should be no Americans unemployed before nObama did that.

The most high-profile tech companies want the best and brightest, no matter where they're from.

If Habib is more qualified than Gomer, that's all that matters.

I'm a software engineer who has been out of work about three months.

The good news is that two companies have now said that they are interested in me, and are going to make me an offer as soon as they can get the paperwork through the levels of executive approval needed.
