Hello all,

I'm starting a new journey. I'm 23 years old, single, very naive, fresh out of my MS degree from one of "public ivy" schools. I'm gonna start with some six figure salary per year in San Jose. So I've wanted to ask about your life experiences about career and money.

1. Was it good to start with such salary at your age? What precautions you took to double it in time and have some investments?

2. What was the biggest mistake you made when you first started that you would be more now?

3. How am I likely to grow this salary and what should be my vision for the next 10 years? How should I appraise the money? Buying land, stocks, houses, cars? How did you build your "wealth" (pool) with your income (water flowing into it)

4. How and what were your expenses in starting years? I know 120k is nothing for single income for a single person in the area. How does it evolve to 200k salary? Changing jobs? Performing very well at job? How do you know when you can afford BMW and Audi or Burberry clothes?

5. Am in a bad position to trap myself in San Jose with this salary since it can hardly afford a good house and living?

I like to know other people's experience who were once here where I am standing. What's wrong with it?

Every BSCS college new hire we hired last year was offered over 100k starting salary. Your experience is hardly unique or special or worth discussing.

I didn't ask you to discuss my experience? I asked about other people's experience who started with a similar salary but now 10 years ahead of me. Why is this so hard to grasp?

Start with a quick & easy read: The Millionaire Next Door

I think it was Gretsky who said "100% of the shots you don't take don't go into the net." To paraphrase, 100% of the money you don't save & add to your investments doesn't grow into a bigger nestegg.

This pertains to choices of living in san jose that would make you more successful and asks specifically people of san jose for their life experiences. I am sorry I didn't ask about your street lamp in San Jose. BTW, they are very very dim compared to ones in LA.
