Is San Jose really that bad with a ratio of male to female people? I have an offer to work in the area and this is something I need to consider because I am 40 and single.

The ratio is Males: 50.3%, Females: 49.7%.

Or maybe you could move to SF which always seems to be touted as having tons more women. The ratio there is Males: 50.7%, Females: 49.3%

All these statistics and more can be found here: //www.city-data.com/

No, honestly I think the ratio thing is drastically overblown. You always hear the guys complaining that there are no single women in SJ. But guess what -- talk to any woman and you'll hear that they can't find any good guys to date either. They're both just looking in the wrong place. Guys look in bars and see very few woman and jump to the conclusion there are no women in Silicon Valley, when in reality they're just not interested in hitting bars. I rarely met women to date in bars, although it has happened a few times. I used match.com in the early days when it was first starting up and kicked-butt on it. My brother in-law met his wife through there recently, so it's probably still good. I've had good luck on other dating sites as well. Women like to take classes. Find some adult classes in canoeing, backpacking, or horse-riding classes. What guy would ever take a canoeing or backpacking class? Guess what? All women.

I'd love to be 40 and single in SJ again. You have a huge pool of hot divorcees to tap.

Thank you, the job sounds too good to pass up, so I'm going to have to move there anyway.

But I've been in overly male situations before and it does lead to some forms of depression I've found, so hoping this turns out well in that regard.

Keep in mind that SJ is only 50 miles from SF....even less to the city, if you choose to live in one of the more affluent suburbs in the west valley.

Despite the statistics, I can tell you that I've lived both in the Silicon Valley as a single guy and now married, with a kid on the way.

When I was in my early 20s and single, I found that the bars tended to be skewed more towards men and the quality of the women wasn't great (could've tried online dating more). I ended up going up to the city just about every weekend for a social/dating life.

Now in my mid-30s and married, I find the Silicon Valley better suited for my lifestyle. Again, online dating may get you better luck than the bars, but you could always head up to the city (try the Marina) on weekends.

Thanks for the ideas, I think I will visit SF more than once.

I actually dated a gal for a while in the city who I met at a bar in the marina. The only problem there is then you basically have a long distance relationship. Of course my wife was living in Danville when I met her which was a real pain initially too.

Hence the reason why I moved up to the city for several years when I was single and in my 20s. To me, dealing with a daily commute to the valley was worth it at the time.
