I like to work from coffee shops that are fairly large, have lots of people and free wifi. Free or cheap nearby parking is also preferable. Usually I work in Seattle and Bellevue in the US, but am considering visiting San? Jose/Sam Francisco area for a week.

Any recommendations anywhere within 20 miles of downtown? Prefer larger places with a crowd.

Other places besides coffee shops (such as libraries) also ok as a second option.

Unless it is an older mom-and-pop type cafe, most cafes will have free wifi. Starbucks and Peets are the most well know and popular (in numbers), but maybe others can offer up a favorite independent cafe. Yelp is probably your best bet here too...

None of the answers tell me anything about the crowd or parking. That is why I posted here in case someone had a specific recommendation. Some Starbucks are tiny.

Yelp is your friend for these types of questions.

Could you narrow your location down a bit? San Francisco/San Jose is a huge area. And what size do you want? Twenty seats? 100 seat? And why do you want crowds? I would think for working you would prefer quiet. There are over 50 Starbucks with wifi and big enough to serve hot food in San Jose alone.

Reason I am open to travel up to 20 miles is that I will be there as a tourist who is also doing contract work. So I will be in SF, San Jose, Mountain View, Fremont etc...

Bigger the better, but if you want specifics, anything that has at least 10 outlets.

Like crowds. Can do work in noise. Like to play chess in the coffee shop too if there are games going on.

Red Rock Coffee on Castro St. in Mountain View. The bottom floor is small and crowded but they have a large second floor with a lot of tables and a number of outlets.

Occasionally I have done afternoon work at "Peet's." There's several around the area. Free wifi if you buy coffee or something. Lots of IT/computer/startup people take their laptops to Peets'.
