Yes, proximity to dickheads and blowhards is a huge selling point for any city...

Also, OP can look into concerts/comedy shows in the area if he/she is into that there might be something going on. Venues to check are the San Jose Arena, San Jose State Events Center, Mountain Winery (nearby Saratoga) or Shoreline Amphitheater (Mountain View)
If there's nothing to do around here, then what is this ^^^?? Well Howdy Doo, there's stuff to do!

Also, one would want to partake of one the ramen places (Santouka, Orenchi, Kumako), Pho (Pho Lynn, Pho Ha Noi, tons more), Chinese (Taiwan Restaurant, Jade China, Hunan Taste), or sushi places (Tomi Sushi, Yuki Sushi, etc.)

Yeah, seriously. Defaulting to Frisco for fun is like eating McDonald's because it's all you can think of. Anybody willing to drive an hour there and back must be pretty desperate to feel cool, even if for a couple hours.

San Jose and Santa Clara County have a terrific array of Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Iranian, Indonesian, Mexican, and other restaurants. If I were looking for formal or "upscale" restaurants I would go north to San Francisco or to the Oakland/Berkeley area. But for "ethnic" restaurants, many of which have quite pleasant interiors, San Jose is great.

You asked about Mexican. Mescal, right downtown on San Fernando St., is a pleasant sitdown Oaxacan restaurant, which means it has a nice choice of moles. It also has plenty of drinks. If you wanted to go for really simple and cheap, there's Mexico Bakery, also downtown, at 87 E. Santa Clara St. Their specialty is tortas, Mexico City style sandwiches on rolls, they're terrific.

We've been to SF, so none of that this time. We did a lot yesterday, went to Winchester house, Santana Row, Valley Fair mall. It was fun.
