Greetings!

My husband will be attending an onsite interview soon (we're in Seattle) and everyone involved seems to be super excited (well, okay.. not me, I'm quite happy here... but that's kinda besides the point). His job would be in Santa Clara.

I intend to apply to a nursing program in about 1-2 years (I'm halfway done with the science and math prereqs and I work super part-time as a CNA). I don't know what my academic options would be in the Bay Area. At the moment I'm not particularly decisive between an LPN or an RN, nor am I keenly interested in seeking out the most competitive programs. I would be happy to consider part-time programs or an accelerated program for bachelor's degree holders too. I'm not sure how much it matters, but I'm confident I want to either pursue geriatrics or hospice.

Also the most important factor in determining the appropriate program (besides my acceptance!) is proximity to a good school district. I don't care if my husband has to commute (his commute is already an hour) but as the primary caregiver (which is not going to change anytime soon) I really need to be close to my kids. My current college is only 10 miles from home (1/2 hr commute in bad traffic).

Also if it helps in getting more customized information: My husband's salary would/should/must be somewhere between $140-170K. I anticipate paying rent of $2200-2700 (for either 2 or 3 bedroom, <1300 sq ft). I'm not worried about tuition (if necessary, we'll dip into savings/investments/equity). One of my kids has ADD/autism and has an IEP... special education programs would also be important to consider... um, what else... I like yoga, community gardens and coffee shops???

So with that, does anyone have recommendations of community colleges, technical colleges, etc...???

Thanks SO much!!!

In California, there is no LPN.

It's LVN, Licensed Vocational Nurse.

If I want to be an LPN I have to pass the NCLEX-PN. If I want to be a LVN I have to pass the NCLEX-PN.

LPN=LVN.

I personally know 3 people who are having trouble finding jobs as a nurse. One is an lvn the other two are rns they have been out of school for 1 to 2 years with all the certifications they need for their respective jobs and have been interviewing but it is a very in the bay area and there are very few positions actually available.

I've heard of this happening here and from old high school friends of mine back in Texas so I suppose it's widespread. I've read various explanations... economy is keeping individuals in the workforce who would otherwise be retiring... some would prefer to move on to other jobs (nursing instructors, etc.) but it doesn't pay as well as a clinical position, etc... I remain with the belief that eventually the Boomers will leave and subsequently, and increasingly, require more healthcare services. Nursing can be quite a diverse field.. in addition to hospitals and nursing homes you can work for the government (like the CDC, Dept of HHS), school systems, become a researcher... if you don't have to work for much/any pay (which is historically what I've been doing) possibilities are even broader.... you get the idea...

The thing is, I'm not really asking if I *should* go into nursing. I'm not wondering how well of a paying job it is or if I'll even find one... I'm just asking what my educational options are in SF.... 2 responses and neither of them address the question....

My guess is that there isn't anybody reading this forum who has the expertize that you need to have your question answered satisfactorily.

I used google, with the search string : lpn and rn programs near san jose

Lot of good hits, and these seemed to have a pretty good list of nearby schools :

* San Jose RN Programs - Find a Nursing School in San Jose, California

* Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate Near San Jose, CA | Degree-Finder.com

Thanks! I'll look into it more after my husband gets back from his interview. I did just a super preliminary search and some of the schools I found say they are a "school of nursing" but when you actually go to the website you realize they are just offering medical and nursing assistance programs (huge difference).
