I am currently residing in Houston and have an job opportunity to move to San Jose. I have liked California from what I heard about it being more accepting to blacks that the south.
I only had a short visit there, and seems nice.

Is it really true that it is better than the south in terms of accepting a black guy from Africa? I wouldn't want to move to a pricey region just to find out it might even be worse.
I appreciate any feedback you may have.

Thanks

California, especially the Bay Area, is a very accepting and tolerant place.

Welcome!

I would hope so. Or at worst it would be similar to the south and I would at least enjoy the weather.
But I glanced through some of the threads and made me wonder if all the good news was just in theory.

The population of black people in the South Bay is very low, but I wouldn't expect you to experience hostility. Overall the area is very diverse and most people are accepting of other cultures.

Well, Northern California is not the South, by any means. I have visited the South many times, and the attitudes there are quite different than in California.

I think you will be fine. Relax!

I've lived in northern California and found that it was pretty diverse. I don't think you would have any problems there. A lot of people wouldn't even care or notice that you are African. They would probably just start talking to you or they would just leave you alone. There are people there from all over the world in the Bay Area/Silicon Valley. Now, of course, you may still find some people that are racist, but it's not too common.

Diverse? Here in San Jose? Not really. San Jose is primarily white and asian. Drive to East San Jose, and it is primarily Hispanic. I used to live in Houston, and I found Houston to be a complete mix of White, Black and Hispanic, Asian.

You really think SJ isn't Hispanic all over? Are you from Billy Millenium's part of town?

True that. But I don't find Houston to be friendly to Blacks. I am not saying they do the stuff they used to do back in the 60's - But there is a great deal of segregation and discrimination. Just inquiring if I should expect the same in SJ.

Go hang out at a popular breakfast spot like Hobbee's or Bill's Cafe one morning. You will see a very diverse crowd - White, Black, Asian, Hispanic. My wife is from Southern California and continually marvels at the diversity in San Jose and Silicon Valley. Go to the Ikea on the weekend and you'd think you were at the United Nations. I've seen Buddhist monks in robes strolling through the Ikea in EPA.

Few people here will care about the color of your skin, unless you start acting like an ***hole. Then people will notice.
