I go to the south bay a lot and don't know about locals' favorites where you can eat for 15 bucks or less inc a soda for a drink. What are you favorites that AREN'T a taqueria or asian place like a noodle house? I know lot's of those are around and cheap to eat at.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I eat a lot of meals by myself and hate going into a place where I am the only person eating solo.
I have no problem with a place like Sonoma Chicken Coop. Reasonable food at a reasonable price and no one thinks you weird for eating alone
.

Bacalhau Grille in Little Portugal, it's serious and unaltered Portuguese food, and they do some Brazilian too. It's rustic, it's authentic, it's delicious, they have a nice terrace in the back too and a full market, and the price couldn't be better for what you are getting. This is a true gem in the 408, I'll let the website do the rest of the talking. cheers

Triple Seven Pizzeria on Saratoga Ave. and Prospect. Saratoga address. Small little hole in the wall place in the shopping center behind McDonald's. Very casual and they serve slices during lunch hours. Mainly takeout, but they have limited seating.

Pizza/breadsticks are dirt cheap, filling (thicker pizza), tasty, and they use quality ingredients. The sauce is excellent. Staff and owner are friendly.

Awesome place, I can't speak highly enough about it.

**** Rose Doughnuts : (breakfast / lunch) : sandwiches, burgers, eggs
1818 Saratoga Avenue, San Jose, CA 95129, (408) 379-3299

Like a 60's style roadside burger joint. Burger & fries w/ drink "meal" for under $7. Also, their breakfast burritos are to die for. Only for breakfast or lunch. Closes at ?4:30 PM?

**** Bill of Fare : (breakfast/lunch) sandwiches, burgers, eggs
1005 Saratoga Ave (Saratoga @ Williams), San Jose, CA 95129, (408) 446-4050

Closes at ?2:30 PM? A fantastic place for breakfast/lunch. They serve breakfast stuff until they close (eggs, omelettes, pancakes, waffles, etc.) as well as sandwiches. Looks like a hole-in-the-wall on the outside (heck, it looks like a tornado picked up a quonset hut and dumped it on top of a gas station). Looks like a diner on the inside.

**** Ringer Hut (Japanese - noodles, soups and other)
1072 Saratoga Ave, San Jose, (408) 554-0877
Ringer Hut America

Ringer Hut is a chain of restaurants in Japan, and this is an authentic champon ramen place (Nagasaki-style ramen). Lot's of different style Japanese (ramen, curry rice dishes, bento boxes, donburi, ...)

**** Falafel Drive In : Mediterranean (middle-eastern : Turkey, Lebanon, Israel)
2301 Stevens Creek Blvd, San Jose, CA 95128, (408) 294-7886

Middle-eastern fast-food. Closes early-ish (?6PM?). Great place for lunch.

**** 99 Chicken : Korean style Fried chicken
2781 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95051, (408) 244-5599

Huge plate of chicken for $10 or less. Includes a salad bar, as well.

**** Sneha Indian Buffet
1214 Apollo Way, Sunnyvale, CA 94085, (408) 481-0700

HUGE buffet selection (over 30 dishes for lunch). Pretty full to packed for lunch, so the buffet dishes are replaced every 10-15 minutes. Under $10.

**** House of Falafel : Middle-Eastern/Greek
19590 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino, 95014, 408.446.2411
House Of Falafel - Menu { across from Vallco in a weird 60's mall}

Basically a "dive". Lebanese or maybe Turkish (similar to Greek) fast food, basically. Shawerma (Lebanese "wraps" filled with meat & veggies, similar to Gyros), Kebabs, Falafel, Kefta, Hummus, Domas, Baba Ghannouj (whipped eggplant mousse), salads, lentil soup, etc.

**** Chef Xiu
855 W El Camino Real, Mountain View, CA 94040, (650) 988-8820

My favorite Chinese restaurant. I always ask for (and order from) the "traditional" (i.e., real) Chinese menu. Ate there for lunch today, and we had Hot & Sour soup, Shanghai-style dumplings, Lamb in pot, crispy braised eggplant, triple delight noodle soup, crispy pork chops with pepper and salt

The Hot & Sour soup here is amazing. It has this base (background flavor) of smokey beef that blows me away. It tastes like they oven-roast their ox/beef bones and then use them for the stock of this soup.

If you are in the neighborhood of trip-7 and feel like Mexican food, drive a couple hundred feet further, past the car wash, and try La Cueva (in the "Sees Candies" strip mall, hidden in back). Try their grilled fish tacos, or their carnitas super taco. Yummmmmmmm.
