I'd like to have dinner in Berkeley before an 8PM show at the Berkeley Rep, but can't leave SJ until 5:30PM. Can this drive be done in one hour during today's evening commute? I will have access to the car pool lane.

I'd normally think this was not possible, but if a lot of people took Friday off work, and with access to the car pool lane, maybe it could be done?

Would be very tough during rush hour. Google Maps shows roughly an hour, without traffic. I-880 NB is severely congested during this time, as all of the Silicon Valley to East Bay commuter traffic is there. I would take I-680 NB to I-580 WB, as the traffic would be flowing pretty good until you reach Fremont.

Surprisingly, I managed to do it in 45 minutes, only because so many people took today off and make it a four day weekend. Traffic was light and I was able to do 65mph min, with just a small amount of weaving around slower traffic driving in the wrong lanes. Any other Friday and I doubt I could have done it in under 75 minutes.

Yes, July 5th was a "holiday" unofficially. You are correct, this could have not been done in under 75 minutes on a "normal" Friday.

On a normal Friday, that would have been a 2 hour ordeal, mainly because it can take an hour to get from San Jose downtown to where the carpool lanes start in northern Milpitas.

You're right! It has taken me an hour to get from North San Jose (around Tasman & Zanker) to Fremont via 237/880 on the very worst days.
