+1. Excellent point. And really, this is the most important, if not the only, factor in all "where should I live" questions.

Thanks again for all the advice. I agree wholeheartedly about the need for living close to work! Our problem is the spouse (and family's primary breadwinner) may be working in Palo Alto while my job opportunities will most likely be in San Francisco. So the question becomes - live in PA to minimize primary breadwinner's commute or split the difference and live somewhere in between PA and SF?

I agree also that Foster City has to be ruled out because of the earthquake risk.

Foster City was supposed to sink into the bay years ago. Still there.

In fact, the whole state of CA should have been in the ocean by now, as far as the earthquake doomsday predictions.

I wouldn't rule out any are because of earthquakes.

In that case I'd suggest Burlingame, Millbrae, San Mateo. All nice suburbs, about midway between SF and PA. With San Mateo, you'd want to be west of Delaware st., as the east side is not as nice.

The risk is not sinking into the bay or going into the ocean.

The risk is something called liquifaction.

Google is your friend.

Speaking of liquifaction, I saw a terrific close up map of the liquifaction zones in the Bay Area and then couldn't find it again. Does anyone have a link to a good map with cities and roads labeled (so we don't have to be familiar with the land forms to know where we are)? I know, I know, I'm being neurotic. But hey, better neurotic than unprepared.
