What documentation will I need to register my kids in public school in San Jose, Santa Clara County?

Edited to add: What else do I need to consider when transferring them?

California requires a TB test, so go ahead and get that done - believe it's good for a year. Usually you need some sort of proof of residence.

The big problem, as someone who was in your shoes last year, is that many good schools around here are "impacted". When a grade level becomes full, the district will assign your child to another school in the district. This means your children could end up assigned to different schools until an opening occurs in your home school. There is no great way to avoid this - the schools can't tell you now if there will be an opening when you move, since kids are constantly coming and going. You also want to make sure that you pick a district that has consistently good schools, so you don't run the risk of being reassigned to a bad school. I know not all schools and all districts have this problem, but it seems to be very common in the good ones.

Your best bet, once you narrow down to some area options, is to call the district directly, as well as a school or two that you like. I did this many times last year, and found them to be very helpful and friendly. Also, keep in mind that finding a rental in a specific school's zone at a specific time can be challenging - you may want to come up with several options.

Good luck!

Ah, one other thing I should have mentioned - the districts here are often tiny. San Jose United is very big, but often there will only be four or six elementary schools in a district. I came from an area which had dozens and dozens of schools in the district so I was surprised by that.
