I usually ask whether they have obscure magazines like: Midgets and Motorcycles, The Pacific Weekly, Argentinian Times, etc.

Once, I had a young girl come to the door, selling magazines, saying she had a rough life, and was trying to pull herself up. She asked me where I had moved from, and when I told her, wow! Who would have guessed that was where she had grown up as well. She thought we had made a connection of some sort, but when I didn't buy anything from her, she bounded off the front porch bad-mouthing me all the way to the street. When that happens, it reeks of SCAM.

In this age of internet I don't see how door-to-door even exists anymore. Anything a person needs is merely a click of the mouse away.

To answer the bolded portion, I'll quote P.T. Barnum : "There's a sucker born every minute...and two to take 'em!"

I checked with the Economist and indeed I was not subscribed to that magazine. I called up the guy who had sold me the subscription and this time his dad picked up the phone. I told him that I had not been subscribed to the magazine and he told me he will check with his kid's coach. I lied to him and told him that I had called his school and knew that this was a scam and will go to the police with his phone number. He became very scared and assured me that this was not a scam and if I didn't get the magazines then he will pay from his own pocket for my subscription. He then said that he will return my money immediately and lo and behold today morning there was an envelope at my door with $120. Do you guys think I should still report him to the police so that other people are not scammed?

Know what would really be funny? If the first issue of his subscription shows up next week. Oops!

I'm confused by how it's a scam if the kid gave you his real phone number.
Sounds more like an irresponsible kid not following up on his promises.
