Hi there,

My parents would like to spend winters in the Bay Area to be closer to their grandkids. They're interested in 1-3 month stays, but I realize I have no idea where to look for these kind of rental options. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

What is their budget? I would think you could negotiate a good rate during the winter for vacation rentals here in the Bay Area--being likely a slower season in parts--especially in January or February. Check vrbo.com for possible rentals and see if you can negotiate a lower monthly rate during the off season.

Thanks for the advice! I had looked at vrbo.com, but had only seen vacation rentals for larger groups (on a weekly or nightly charge basis). But that's a good point that they might be willing to discount during winter.

There's always the Extended Stay Hotels. They give a better rate when you stay over a month.

homewood suites in san jose is 149/night with a full kitchen, living room, and bedroom with free breakfast and dinner mon-thurs.

Lots of apartment complexes by archstone seem to have short leases.

While homewood suites might be a good emergency situation, the OP asked about 1-3 month stays and the nightly rate would be $4500/mo. (They might have lower long-term rates.)

If your parents are willing to deal with people (who can be real ****s at times), then I would suggest :

SF bay area sublets & temporary classifieds - craigslist

One can find 1-to-many month sub-lets.

For example :

studio (private entrance/kitchen/bath) in Palo Alto for $1800/mo.

Or:

sublet 850 sq. feet furnished 1BR waterfront apt in Foster City Jan-Mar 2014, $2400/mo.

Also check out Airbnb - we've had great luck with it.
