Where are the best schools where I can still rent a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment. I don't want to rent a SFR or someone's condo. Budget under $4000, I use $4000 because I can't image anyone being able to charge that much for an apartment, but I'm expecting under $2500. I know nothing about Northern Cal.

$4000/rent is not a crazy number for this area, trust me

I suggest you get on Craigslist and put in $4000, and see what pops up. That will tell you what your options are for housing, then you can take it from there, checking out the schools in those areas.

Here's a search for 3 bedrooms (for all of SF Bay Area), max $4,000. I had it sorted by high price first, so you don't have to wade through all the $1 ads, etc.

Here's a resource to check out schools:

EDIT: I looked at the Craigslist ads after posting. It looks like you can afford Cupertino. That's really exciting, actually, as their schools are fantastic.

I'd say target Cupertino.
